Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by implementing a number of innovative practices and programs.

As we continue to focus on literacy, we have made an exceptional push in Accelerated Reader. This year, our students have passed over 20,000 Accelerated Reader tests. As of this grading period, 207 students have met individual goals, 64 students have doubled their goals, 12 students have tripled their goals, and 2 have quadrupled – a JSBES first! Our school led the district in percentage of AR tests passed out of those attempted.

With both private and district support, our school continues to make significant strides on our 1:1 technology initiative. This has allowed us to incorporate a great deal of 21st Century Learning, teaching children to inquire, explore, and create as they will one day do in college and the workplace. On any given day, a visitor to our school would see children researching online, downloading/uploading images, creating videos, and utilizing a variety of software and applications. The laptops and tablets have opened windows to high tech teaching tools as well as a wealth of opportunities for formative assessment and the targeted learning that follows.

Our continued partnership with LEGO Education has generated much excitement with our children and will soon result in our school being awarded a first-of-its-kind national designation. The high quality of our school-wide musical led to our students being the first elementary school in the district to perform at Dorman High School’s College and Career Center. Moreover, we continue to enjoy strong partnerships with such institutions as Milestones Church, which gifted a pair of shoes to each of our students, and Spartanburg Methodist College which provided a holiday present to all JSBES students. SMC President Colleen Keith, in partnership with the Mary Black Foundation, donated $10,000.00 to support our after school program.

Collectively, the strength of our teachers and programs have yielded remarkable results. Out of 659 elementary schools in SC, JSBES was the 15th most improved in 2014.The EVAAS “Value Added” Report shows our school performing well above the 2014 growth standard, and we earned an “Excellent” Improvement Rating.

We look forward to continued success and appreciate the partnerships of our parents and community.
